Big Mauser fan, but last week I bought my first Mannlicher. A 1958 Model MC in 30-06 caliber, serial number 24561. Rifle is in perfect condition & fitted with a swing-off Pachmayr scope mount & 4x81 Weatherby Imperial scope. The rifle is nice & compact with 22' barrel, ideal for a brush gun, or what I would call a 'bushveld rifle'. Hence I am considering taking the scope off & fitting a ghost ring sight. Any thoughts on this? Since I don't want to mess with this rifle if it will diminish its value or appeal.
Also, any info on this rifle or model will be appreciated. Can you handle it instrumental usher. Does anybody know where or how I can obtain a ghost ring sight for this rifle, or would this have to be a custom job by a good gunsmith? Hi, I'm a new member. Does anybody know where or how I can obtain a ghost ring sight for this rifle, or would this have to be a custom job by a good gunsmith? Because of the split rear receiver bridge there are a couple of ways to put a receiver sight on a M/S. A sight was made in the past which had the aperture arm spring loaded so it would pivot back and then forward to allow retraction and closing of the bolt. You may find one of these at a gun show or by doing a web search (es).
The sight may have been either Lyman or Redfield manufacture. Another option is to acquire a cocking piece sight which is fitted into the end of the cocking piece on the bolt. It will require good machining to have it done right but is really the best of the two options. There is somebody still manufacturing these sights. I have seen recent pictures in the Accurate Reloading site and also I think on the Holland and Holland web pages. This latter sight is a classic and will not be inexpensive to purchase or have installed. There is a current thread at AR on the gunsmithing forum which shows this type of sight on a newly manufactured square bridge Mauser if you care to look for it.
